The FILMETS Badalona Film Festival began its 46th edition this evening with an Opening Session at the Teatre Zorrilla in Badalona. This year, for the first time in the history of the festival, FILMETS will have a hybrid format. Three audience-attended sessions at the Teatre Zorrilla in Badalona and two at the Institut francais in Barcelona will be complemented by the online screening of all 297 films in the competition at www.festivalfilmets.cat. You can view the short films for free by registering on the website.

This year, the Opening Session of FILMETS had the privilege of hosting an extra-special première. Carla Simón’s latest short, Correspondència, was shown for the first time in Catalonia. On the 5th of October this year, Carla Simón received a 2020 National Culture Award from the Catalan National Council of Culture and the Arts (CONCA).

Carla Simón’s film première at FILMETS was followed by another inaugural screening with the documentary Èpica. El llegat de La Fura dels Baus (Epic. The Legacy of La Fura dels Baus), a co-production from La Fura dels Baus and Badalona Comunicació.

The next audience session at the Teatre Zorrilla takes place at 7 pm on Saturday the 17th of October with the screening of the short films nominated at the prestigious British BAFTA awards. The festival’s Night of the Venuses closing ceremony will take place on Saturday the 24th of October at 9 pm.

All the audience-attended sessions of FILMETS are adhered to the protocols specified by the health regulations, and all those wishing to attend must register online before doing so. As a result of the new regulations, the Teatre Zorrilla has less capacity than in previous years.

Carla Simón and Correspondència

At the Opening Session, the audience had their first chance to watch Correspondència, the film by Carla Simon and Dominga Sotomayor shown at the 68th San Sebastian International Film Festival. The film was screened as a non-competing short at FILMETS.

Carla Simón is currently in Tenerife writing the script for her next film and was unable to attend the FILMETS screening, but she did send a video message. In the video, she expressed her regret at not being able to be in Badalona because the short was set there and features several of her family members who live in the city. The director has always collaborated with FILMETS, having first presented a short film at the festival in the early days of her career.

Correspondència portrays a filmed epistolary conversation between two young filmmakers who discuss cinema, their families – both present and past – legacies, and motherhood. Their personal reflections take shape in the sensitive images filmed day by day, until, suddenly, they echo the political emergency of a country.

Èpica. El llegat de la Fura dels Baus (Epic. The Legacy of La Fura dels Baus)

This year, the Opening Session of FILMETS was treated to an additional and exceptional première. The documentary Èpica. El llegat de La Fura dels Baus (Epic. The Legacy of La Fura dels Baus), a co-production from La Fura dels Baus and Badalona Comunicació was shown.

The documentary gives the spectator a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the Information v Memory workshop. The film analyses the work of La Fura dels Baus’ Fundació Èpica and evaluates the role of art and science in addressing the modern-day challenges of the information age.

Scientists, artists, researchers, chefs, philosophers and residents of the Manresà neighbourhood of Badalona (where Fundació Èpica has its headquarters) participated in the workshop, which, not only served to create a multi-disciplinary show but also put new theories and technologies to the test.

All the shorts in the competition will be screened online

The 46th edition of the FILMETS Badalona Film Festival will be unlike any other. Among other reasons, because it will be the first time in the history of the festival that all the 297 competing shorts can be viewed for free on an online platform. You can access all the competing international sessions simply by visiting the FILMETS website www.festivalfilmets.cat and registering for free.
