FILMETS is entering its second and final week of the festival. After the Opening Session and the evening dedicated to the BAFTA nominees, this week the festival offers two audience-attended sessions at the Institut français in Barcelona, three online FILMETS Pro sessions, and the Night of the Venuses closing ceremony.

Throughout the week, the 297 shorts competing at the festival can be viewed for free at www.festivalfilmets.cat after registering.

The Institut français in Barcelona will host two International Sessions on Tuesday the 20th and Wednesday the 21st of October, both at 8 pm and audience-attended; sessions 16 and 17 respectively.

Three sessions aimed at professionals

FILMETS Pro will also be offering three sessions aimed at professionals from the audiovisual industry. The sessions will be as follows:

  • ‘The Most Innovative Formats on World Television Today’, on Tuesday the 20th at 10 am. The session is organised with the support of the Audiovisual Cluster of Catalonia and will review the most innovative programmes from the 2019-2020 television season. It will be led by Miquel Garcia and Manel Raya from the Catalan Audiovisual Media Corporation’s (CCMA) Formats laboratory.
  • A ‘Masterclass’ with Juanjo Sáenz, on Thursday the 22nd at 11 am. With the collaboration of the Pau Gargallo School of Art and Design in Badalona, Juanjo Sáenz, illustrator and storyteller, will hold a one-off masterclass.
  • ‘Move your Short’, on Friday the 23rd of October, at 6 pm. A guide to pitching your short, with three stars from the most prestigious short film festivals and markets in Europe: Tim Redford, coordinator of the International Competition and the selection committee of the Clermont-Ferrand festival; Marguerite Hayter, actress and film director and member of La fête du courtmetrage organising committee; and Carolina Gómez de Llarena, who has participated in the Short Film Corner of the Cannes Film Festival.

For this year’s edition, the FILMETS Pro sessions will be held exclusively in a virtual format and can be followed on www.festivalfilmets.cat. The sessions will be broadcast live, and subsequently posted on the website.

The Night of the Venuses, at 9 pm and on TV

The Night of the Venuses is the festival’s closing ceremony. It will take place at the Teatre Zorrilla at 9 pm on Saturday the 24th of October, the day when the awards will be presented to the winning filmmakers. The ceremony, presented by Lídia Heredia and Queco Novell, will be broadcast by Televisió de Badalona and the televisions associated to La Xarxa.

This year’s ceremony is based on an original idea by Edu Pericas Bosch and Xavier Ricart, who will also direct the show. The script is the work of Sergi Pompermayer, with Badalona Cultura SL in charge of the executive production.

A hybrid FILMETS festival

During the first weekend of FILMETS, the Opening Session at the Teatre Zorrilla on Friday the 16th of October screened Correspondència, Carla Simón’s latest short, and the documentary Èpica. El llegat de La Fura dels Baus (Epic. The Legacy of La Fura dels Baus). The shorts O28, Bless You!, and Un trésor egyptien were also shown.

The second of the audience sessions served as Catalonia’s gateway to the prestigious 2020 BAFTA Awards organised by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. Like the Opening Session, this official section of the competition also took place at the Teatre Zorrilla in Badalona.

In addition to the audience-attended sessions, all the short films in the festival can be viewed on the festival’s website: www.festivalfilmets.cat. All sessions, both those with a live audience and online, are free and open to all, but you must register on the festival’s website beforehand.
