The short film that won the Palme d’Or for Best Short Film at the last Cannes Film Festival, ‘The water murmurs’, will open the 48th edition of FILMETS Badalona Film Festival. This movie will be screened at the Teatre Zorrilla in Badalona at the Opening Session of FILMETS, which will take place on Friday 21st October at 9pm. The 48th edition of the FILMETS festival will take place from 21st to 30th October.

‘The water murmurs’ will also be presented at FILMETS as a premiere in Catalonia, as it has never been premiered in our country until now.

It is a 15-minute Chinese fiction movie released in May 2022. It is directed by Story Chan and Taiwen Zhang, Annabel Yao and Rongxi Li play the starring roles.

‘The water murmurs’ sets the action just after an asteroid hits the earth. Volcanic eruptions then threaten to submerge a riverside village and its inhabitants begin to flee inland. The day before leaving, Nia, the protagonist of the story, says goodbye to a childhood friend, but on her way she crosses paths with some of the villagers. Gradually, her memories of the village become clearer in her mind.

Pedro Casablanc, Macarena Gómez and the ‘bailaor’ El Yiyo will present their short films at the Opening Session, at the Teatre Zorrilla in Badalona.

The opening session of FILMETS will be attended by the well-known actors Pedro Casablanc and Macarena Gómez, who will present the short film ‘Takbir’, a Catalan production written and directed by Jordi Calvet, who will also attend the screening. The flamenco dancer ‘El Yiyo’ will also take the stage of the Teatre Zorrilla, not to dance though, but to present the film he stars in, ‘Tu niño’.

The short film ‘Takbir’ stars Pedro Casablanc, Macarena Gómez, Iván Hidalgo, Xènia Tostado, Melyssa Pinto, Octavi Pujades and Guiomar Puerta. Takbir’ will have its official premiere in Catalonia at the FILMETS festival, where the actors and actresses, and the director will be present.

The movie begins when a writer turns up at a police station in Madrid to denounce that he has unwittingly become the ideologue behind the latest ISIS attacks around the world. This is the starting point for a plot that gets developed to a climax which is wether or not to carry out a terrorist attack in the Spanish capital. It is a short film of only 15 minutes but with a constantly increasing tension.

‘Tu niño’ (your child) is a Catalan, French and American co-production film of fiction genre and 16 minutes long. It is directed and written by Sergi Castellà and starring the dancer ‘El Yiyo’, who has been defined by music specialists as the new face of flamenco today.

The film is a love letter of a son longing to connect with his distant father. The journey of a gypsy dancer who leaves his community in Badalona to immerse himself in the city of Los Angeles. Without practically knowing what he is looking for, ‘Your Child’ gets lost in the underworld of a decaying society.

Belén Rueda’s latest short film will also be screened at the opening session.

The plot explains that Mia, played by Belén Rueda, wakes up one morning with a strange pain in her leg. Her limp is getting worse and worse when a woman she doesn’t know at all, met when she passes her on the Street, tells her that the pain is not what it seems. She must either cast a spell that very night or her life will never be the same again.

A festival, entirely on-site, with 215 films competing

In contrast to the past two editions, FILMETS returns this year to its original project as a competitive, entirely on-site festival. Thus, 24 thematic sessions have been planned, where 215 short films will be screened in competition, all of them aspiring to win one of the Venus, the awards given by the festival.

The festival has three competitive venues: the Teatre Zorrilla in Badalona, the Institut Français in Barcelona and the Can Castellet cinemas in Sant Boi de Llobregat. There will also be 4 more official but non-competitive venues where short films will be screened: the Germans Trias Hospital in Badalona, the Guttmann Institute in Badalona, the Badalona Serveis Assistencials health centres and the IFP-Grupo Planeta headquarters.
